074.001 What does المدثر al-muddathir mean?

يَاأَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ (74.1)

 

To wear an overcoat: It is the active participle of the word تَدَثَّرَ tadathara which means to wear an over garment. An over garment is any dress worn over a dress that is in contact with the skin or شعار. A cloak or overcoat would be considered as a دثار. 

 

The original word is متدثّر: The original word is مُتَدَثِّر then the ت was joined to the د as it is easier to say and became مُدَّثِّر .

 

Use in hadith: The Prophet (S) used the word دثار when describing the Ansar : «الأنصار شعار والناس دثار» The Ansar are the undergarments while people are the over garments i.e. the Ansar are special and the people are general.
